Species
The Mantis Shrimp is a marine crustacean of the order Stomatopoda. There have been over 400 different species of Mantis Shrimp found around the world and they are all under the order Unipeltata.
Ecology
Mantis Shrimp hunt down their prey , chase and kill them. They do not leave their homes, which are little burrows in the sea floor, except to hunt or relocate. They can be diurnal or nocturnal, depending on the species. They are equipped with a variety of predatory claws depending on the species. The two groups are smashers and spearers.

Predators
Smashers: Smashers literally smash their prey, attacking snails, crabs, molluscs and rock oysters. Their blunt clubs enabled them to crack open the shells of their prey.
Spearers: Spearers spear their prey. They prefer the meat of softer animals, like fish, which their barbed claws can more easily slice and snag at very high speeds.
